WHAT ARE CARBON EMISSIONS?
Carbon Emissions are the release of carbon gases from factories, automobiles, trains, and aircraft into the atmosphere. The carbon gases can lead to air pollution that have been a major problem in our society. Air pollution is a combination of natural and man-made air substances that organisms inhale produced by the burning of fossil fuels and ground-level ozone such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and chemical vapors. A buildup of these gases can cause global warming, the increase in the earth's average atmospheric temperature, and diseases such as asthma, cardiovascular diseases, changes in lung function, and death.
What causes carbon emissions?
Since the first and second Industrial Revolution, human activities have immensely increased the carbon concentration in the atmosphere. These human activities mostly include the burning of fossil fuels. The three type of fossil fuels that are used the most are coal, natural gas, and petroleum. When fossil fuels are ignited, carbon gases are emitted into the atmosphere. Statistics also say that 96.5% of carbon emissions are from the burning of fossil fuels.
Three sectors that uses fossil fuels:
- Transportation (Planes, Trains, Automobiles, etc.)
- Utilities (Power, gas, etc...)
- Industrial Production
